Multi-Region Writes
← Back to DP-420 Terminology Reference
Category: Data Distribution & Consistency
Summary: Every region accepts reads and writes simultaneously (multi-master).
Overview
Multi-region writes (multi-master) is a configuration that allows every region associated with an Azure Cosmos DB account to accept both reads and writes simultaneously, rather than routing all writes to a single region. This reduces write latency for globally distributed applications and improves write availability, but requires a conflict resolution policy to handle concurrent updates to the same item made in different regions.

DP-420 Style Practice Questions
Q1. What is the main benefit of enabling multi-region writes for a global application?
- A. Reduced write latency and improved write availability across regions
- B. Elimination of the need for a partition key
- C. Automatic encryption of all data at rest
- D. Free throughput in additional regions
Q2. What must be configured when using multi-region writes to handle simultaneous conflicting updates?
- A. A conflict resolution policy
- B. A synthetic partition key
- C. A unique key constraint
- D. An indexing policy
Answer Key
Answers are listed at the very end so you can attempt the questions first.
- Q1 (Multi-Region Writes): A. Reduced write latency and improved write availability across regions — Multi-region writes let every region accept writes locally, reducing latency and improving write availability.
- Q2 (Multi-Region Writes): A. A conflict resolution policy — A conflict resolution policy is required to determine how to resolve conflicting writes to the same item from different regions.
