PartitionKeyRUConsumption (Diagnostic Log)

Category: Maintenance & Security
Summary: Per-second RU/s consumption per partition key; pinpoints hot partitions.
Overview
PartitionKeyRUConsumption is a diagnostic log table (available through Azure Monitor resource-specific diagnostic logs) that logs every second's aggregated RU/s consumption per partition key. It is the go-to table for troubleshooting hot partitions, letting you pinpoint exactly which partition key values are consuming a disproportionate share of throughput, which the higher-level Normalized RU Consumption metric can only show at the partition level.

DP-420 Style Practice Questions
Q1. What does the PartitionKeyRUConsumption diagnostic log table record?
- A. Per-second aggregated RU/s consumption for each partition key
- B. The total storage size of each logical partition
- C. The list of composite indexes defined on a container
- D. Control-plane operations such as adding a region
Q2. Which troubleshooting scenario is PartitionKeyRUConsumption best suited for?
- A. Identifying a hot partition by pinpointing which partition key values consume disproportionate RUs
- B. Identifying skewed logical partition storage size
- C. Auditing control-plane changes like region additions
- D. Estimating change feed processing lag
Answer Key
Answers are listed at the very end so you can attempt the questions first.
- Q1 (PartitionKeyRUConsumption (Diagnostic Log)): A. Per-second aggregated RU/s consumption for each partition key — PartitionKeyRUConsumption logs per-second RU/s consumption aggregated by partition key value.
- Q2 (PartitionKeyRUConsumption (Diagnostic Log)): A. Identifying a hot partition by pinpointing which partition key values consume disproportionate RUs — This table is specifically designed to help diagnose hot partitions by exposing per-partition-key RU consumption over time.
