Category: Integration & Analytics

Summary: Near real-time analytics via a separate column-store, no RU impact on transactional data.

Overview

Azure Synapse Link for Azure Cosmos DB enables near real-time analytics over operational data by automatically syncing changes into a separate, column-oriented analytical store, without impacting the performance or consuming the RUs of the transactional (OLTP) workload. Analytical store data can then be queried from Azure Synapse Apache Spark or Synapse SQL serverless, enabling hybrid transactional/analytical processing (HTAP) without complex ETL pipelines.

DP-420 Style Practice Questions

Q1. What is the primary benefit of enabling the analytical store via Azure Synapse Link?

  • A. Near real-time analytics over operational data without consuming transactional RUs or requiring ETL
  • B. Reduced storage costs for the transactional store
  • C. Automatic multi-region writes
  • D. Stronger consistency for transactional queries

Q2. From which services can you query the Azure Cosmos DB analytical store?

  • A. Azure Synapse Spark or Synapse SQL serverless
  • B. Only from the Azure Cosmos DB SDK
  • C. Only from Power BI directly
  • D. Only from Azure Functions

Answer Key

Answers are listed at the very end so you can attempt the questions first.

  • Q1 (Azure Synapse Link / Analytical Store): A. Near real-time analytics over operational data without consuming transactional RUs or requiring ETL — Synapse Link syncs data into a separate analytical store, enabling analytics without impacting transactional RU consumption.
  • Q2 (Azure Synapse Link / Analytical Store): A. Azure Synapse Spark or Synapse SQL serverless — The analytical store is designed to be queried from Azure Synapse Spark pools or Synapse SQL serverless.
